For the first time in CLS history, this year's competition began with forty-four students who briefed and argued before a panel of practitioner judges entirely on Zoom! Both the students and the judges logged in for what was a historic round of oral arguments from all across the country—from here in New York City to Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Columbus, OH; Detroit, MI; Oakland, CA; to Washington, DC. The students have worked incredibly hard and shown themselves to be skillful, fierce advocates with a love for written and oral advocacy. We look forward to hearing them argue again next semester!

The semifinal round is scheduled to take place in February 2021. This year's problem, United States ex rel. Moore v. Confluence Bank, N.A, concerns a fictional qui tam suit centered on the CARES Act's Paycheck Protection Program. The problem focuses on what standard of review should apply when the Government moves to dismiss qui tam suits under the False Claims Act, 31 U.S.C. §§ 3729 et seq., as well as scienter and materiality in fraud pleadings. Jillian Williams '21 wrote the problem.

Congratulations again to our semi-finalists, and to all our competitors this year!
