Professor Michael Doyle will speak about the importance of the UN and the challenges it faces, his career at the UN, and what it's like to work at the UN in general.
Professor Doyle is a member of the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA) at Columbia University. He specializes in international relations theory, international security, and international organizations. Professor Doyle previously served as assistant secretary-general and special adviser to United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan from 2001 to 2003. He has been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations since 1992 and is the former chair of the Academic Council of the United Nations System.
UN Day marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being. 24 October has been celebrated as United Nations Day since 1948.
