Investment Arbitration in Latin America: Current challenges in an unstable region

This panel features three experts to talk about investment arbitration in Latin America. The panelists will delve into topics such as denunciation of investment treaties and sunset clauses, UNCITRAL arbitration as an alternative to the ICSID system, and treaty shopping.

Speakers: 

  • Jennifer Haworth is a partner at Sidley Austin and serves as counsel in complex international arbitration cases with a focus on investment treaty arbitration. She has advised and represented private and sovereign clients in proceedings before ICSID and its Additional Facility, the ICC and other arbitral institutions, as well as in adhoc arbitration such as under the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. She has also advised and represented private parties and governments in WTO disputes. In addition, she counsels clients on the implications of investment rules for their global operations. She is consistently recognized for her arbitration work. She is ranked in the 2021 edition of Chambers Global as well as the 2020 and 2021 editions of Chambers USA in International Arbitration.
  • Patrick Taylor is a partner in the International Dispute Resolution Group at Debevoise & Plimpton. His practice focuses on commercial and investment treaty arbitration, with particular experience in the upstream oil & gas, energy and telecommunications sectors, and tax-related disputes. He is also  recommended as a leading lawyer for arbitration in Chambers Global (2021) and Chambers UK (2022). 
  • Roberto Aguirre Luzi is a partner at King & Spalding specializing in counseling multinational corporations on complex arbitration. He is experienced in administrative and civil law, government contracts, oil and gas contracts, public utilities, and power and infrastructure projects. Listed as a leading member of the international arbitration bar in the 2011 Global Arbitration Review 45 Under 45 rankings, Roberto has also been individually recognized by Chambers Latin America and featured in Who’s Who in International Arbitration.
